Management Of Bone Infections
Bone infections, or osteomyelitis, are serious conditions caused by bacterial or fungal infections that affect the bone. They can occur due to open fractures, surgical procedures, bloodstream infections, or direct bacterial spread from nearby tissues. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial to prevent complications such as bone destruction, abscess formation, or chronic infections. Management involves a combination of antibiotics, surgical intervention when necessary, and supportive care to promote healing and prevent recurrence.
Diagnosis of Bone Infections
- Clinical Symptoms – Fever, localized pain, swelling, redness, and restricted movement
- Imaging Studies – X-rays, MRI, CT scans, and bone scans to detect infection spread
- Laboratory Tests – Blood tests (CBC, CRP, ESR), culture tests, and bone biopsy for identifying causative organisms
Non-Surgical Treatment
- Intravenous (IV) Antibiotics – Long-term antibiotic therapy (4-6 weeks) based on culture sensitivity
- Oral Antibiotics – Follow-up oral therapy to prevent recurrence
- Pain Management – NSAIDs, analgesics for symptom relief
- Immobilization – Bracing or splinting to reduce stress on the affected bone
